Byrne sat across from us at Second Division headquarters.

“It’s barely seven thirty in the morning, guys. I send you after my killer and here you two clowns are hanging around my office before I’ve even had my second cup of coffee. What, are you looking for some extra paperwork to file?”

“What else have you got on who might have hired Gulevich?” I asked.

“That would be the sixty-four billion dollar question, wouldn’t it? Right now, my money’s on this Larkin character.”

“Any more word come in about him overnight?”

“Nope. Looks like he’s still in the wind.” Byrne cleared his throat. His partner seemed to be missing in action this morning, but it was still early, DC traffic and all. He looked at Toronto. “How’s the hand?”

Toronto crossed his booted feet in the chair. “Hurts. But doctors say it should be okay once it heals.”

“Good to know. Right now you look like a wounded bear, which I imagine should make you even more dangerous than usual.”

“I guess you know me then.”

“I know your reputation. Some of it good, some of it not so good.”

Toronto shrugged. “It is what it is.”

“You know I want this guy, and you know why I want him. Hell, I want to find out who hired Gulevich just as much you guys, especially if it turns out to be Larkin. Could be open and shut, the best chance we’ve had in a long time to find Gulevich again and bring him down this time for good.

“Find Gulevich, Frank. Help me find Gulevich and help me end this guy’s career. Or figure out a way to take him down yourselves; I don’t really care at this point. All I want is to crack the shell and get to this guy.”

“He was staying in Georgetown before the attack, right?”

“Yeah, I heard from the watch guys you were nosing around over there at the address he gave the security company. But when we searched the place we found it empty. No evidence he’d been living there.”

“But a witness I interviewed and his boss Bittner both told me he’d been seen going in and out of there.”

“That’s what we were told, too. All I know is what we found there, which was a big fat zero. Like I told you, this guy Gulevich is a ghost.”

“You think he’s still in the city?”

“Most likely.”

“How do you know that?”

Byrne sighed as if conjuring up painful memories. “Helen and I got close because we had a source.”

“Helen was your former partner.”

“Yes.”

“Who was your source?”

“A guy who’d known Gulevich from time they spent together in the Russian Army. Worked at the Russian embassy. He and Gulevich used to have a drink together every now and then.”

“Where is he now?”

“Dead. Like Helen.”

Toronto and I looked at one another.

“How many people has this guy Gulevich killed?”

Byrne shrugged. “Four confirmed, but we really don’t know exactly. The man’s a predator. You two should know something about that, what with those birds you fly and all.”

“What makes you so sure he’s still in DC?”

Byrne took a long breath.
